When Paul Myers moved from Houston to Calgary for a better job in 2000, he had no idea that his 10-year-old son, Tyler, was receiving the best employment opportunity.

Blackhawks will re-sign their big 3; what happens next is the issue

The re-signing of NHL stars can be like an earthquake. The aftershocks can have as much impact as the initial event. That scenario is supposedly in play for first-year Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman as he moves toward completing contract extensions for Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith. Of course, Bowman was going to get these deals done because Toews is a young Steve Yzerman, Kane is a crafty goal scorer and Keith is the team’s shutdown defenseman. Since the salary cap was introduced in 2005, the vast majority of teams have chosen to tie up their indispensible players long-term.

Roberto Luongo’s comeback game evolved into Jimmy Howard’s statement game as the Detroit Red Wings rookie goalie played perhaps his best NHL game to beat Luongo’s Vancouver Canucks 3-1.

In the NHL’s Original Six era, it was almost a right of passage, an initiation ritual, for a young player to be leveled by a blindside hit. As he was sprawled on the ice, an opponent would say, "Welcome to the NHL, kid. Next time keep your head up."
